I've always wondered why an adaptation of Pat Frank's "Alas, Babylon" was never made for the big screen. As I aged and my cynicism was honed I figured it was because the novel was too positive at the end for a nuclear war story to pass Hollywood's litmus for "message". Same goes for "Lucifer's Hammer"
